Latitude Contemporary Art Exhibition 2010 Announced

Written By: Ian S. Russell

Latitude Contemporary Art Exhibition Announced
Latitude Festival is extremely proud to announce the launch of the Latitude Contemporary Art Exhibition (LCA) and the LCA Award at this year's sold out 5th Edition of the festival.

The LCA Exhibition will continue Latitude Festival's enormous devotion to the arts with a myriad of new and existing contemporary art works on display In The Woods, a stunning woodland setting and one of the most intriguing areas of the magnificent Latitude site.  For the inaugural LCA Exhibition, six key artists have been specially commissioned by the LCA to craft new works for the 2010 launch: Tim Etchells, Susan Collis, Graham Hudson, Chosil Kil, Graeme Miller and David Blandy.

The LCA comprises the Creator of Latitude and Managing Director of Festival Republic Melvin Benn, Independent arts writer Louise Gray, Tate Modern curator Ben Borthwick, curator/deputy editor of 'The Wire' Anne Hilde Neset and Managing Director of Lavish Ami Jade Cadillac.

The LCA Award of £10,000 will be presented to one of the artists providing new work for the exhibition, chosen by the LCA panel of judges. The prize will cover research, development, production costs and artist fees for a new piece to be debuted for the LCA Exhibition at Latitude 2011

Selecting the 2010 LCA Award winner will be a prestigious panel of LCA judges - Creator of Latitude and Managing Director of Festival Republic Melvin Benn, broadcaster, journalist and presenter on Radio 4's World At One and BBC2's The Review Show Martha Kearney and Young British Artist Gavin Turk. The panel will select the winner on Saturday 17th July following a tour of the new works, with an official announcement and presentation of the LCA Award in the Lavish Lounge on the Latitude site.

Melvin Benn has always intended contemporary art to be an integral part of Latitude Festival.
 He says:
"It was always my intention that contemporary art would be a key element of the programme at Latitude.  We have always had some spectacular works displayed throughout the site and In The Woods.  This year, in Latitude's fifth edition, I am thrilled to expand this side of the programme by introducing the Latitude Contemporary Art Exhibition and the LCA Award, which will bring some exceptional talent to Latitude this year and help create something very special for next year as well."

Martha Kearney says:
"I have always enjoyed Latitude for its unique setting and breadth as a festival, encompassing so much more than music. The new arts prize is an exciting development and I am looking forward to seeing the new work in the beautiful woodland setting."

Running in parallel with the LCA selected artists, additional artists that have appeared at Latitude previously are creating  new works to be exhibited as part of the LCA; Mode 2, Johnny Cole and James Rueben.

Also exhibiting as part of LCA will be:
A large group of artists showing existing works; David Blandy, Caroline Wright, Jake Clarke, Luke Losey, Tim Simmons, Paul Burgess, Louise Colbourne, Dryden Goodwin, Jenny Baines, Zoë Brown, Jim Hobbs, Matt Hulse, Kate Street, Semiconductor and Vicki Thornton.

Andy Cooke - Guitars/Bass/Backing Vocals
Adam Wells – Drums/Percussion

Indie-punk four-piece band Fighting Fiction are set to release their brand new single “We Will Not Forget” on 6th May 2010 through Xtra Mile Recordings,  its not obscure coincidence that the release of this single with coagulate with the forthcoming general election.
Not intentionally a two-finger salute to the government in the traditional sentiment of a majority of punk music, rather a way to rouse some anger and pride into an entire generation of who are coming of voting age. The song stresses the power of the vote. Rather than a call of Anarchy; more a call of accountability. To speak your voice of politics and flare it into action.
Fighting fiction formed late 2007 in Bristol when they met in University. Born with a mutual passion for exthralling live performances, their sound creates an immense impact with Indie-rock guitar riffs, with Reggae tinged Punk and socially conscious lyrics. The lyrics are written with anguish, and sung with a passion.

"Stormin ' Norman ! Tight punchy playing and production with warped off-kilter lyrics in the great English tradition of songs like Arnold Layne and Tracy Jacks. A storming track." - Tom Rob inson (BBC 6 Music)

Written By; Dell Waring
Date; 19th April
Title; Jaakko & Jay Announce Album Release Date.

Finnish duo Jaakko & Jay have announced the release of  their debut album ‘War Is Noise’ on 24th May, through Xtra Mile Recordings.

Conjoining the spirit of punk with acoustic, stripped-back folksy approach, Jaakko & Jay have reached out to there fans in their home country, aswell as throughout Europe, with more or less a consistant tour on the go. There equipment includes one mic, an acoustic guitar, and a snare, and ride drum set, whilst travelling in a motor home!
J&J are gaining recognition around Europe and the UK by supporting Mariachi El Bronx, Billy Talent, among various others. They were discovered by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens at this years’ Eurosonic.  Despite coming from the region of which is better known as for Santa Claus and his Reindeer, J&J  could quite easily out-jolly Father Christmas! The music throws a high-spin on the more classic punk themes such as drinking, making music, drinking, and maybe just a bit more drinking! Acoustic songs that show their simplicity in a live situation by egaging the audience in, and putting smiles on every single persons face, from the teenage, to the elderly, from the sound tech guys, to the bouncers.
Jaakko & Jay have already got plenty of summer festivals and tour dates to be announced in due course, including a set at Brighton’s The Great Escape, from now, Jaakko & Jay’s popularity is just set to sky-rocket even further!

Pete Doherty's Babyshambles confirm for T In The Park

Written By: Ian S. Russell

Troubled Brit-pop Icon Pete Doherty has taken on yet more work for 2010, His band Babyshambles have confirmed they will be playing this years T In The Park. Added to this festival Pete will be performing at a number of charity events around the UK as-well as performing in th newly re-formed Libertines at this years Leeds & Reading Festival.

I have my doubts that Pete will make it thought the year without missing a few of the above dates, but a few sources have claimed that Mr Doherty has been attempting to clean up his act before the Libertines reunion - One has to wonder if he has the power to clean something up when rehab clinics worldwide have failed to do so.

Fighting Fiction - New Single & Tour

Written By: Ian S. Russell

Emerging indie-punk four-piece Fighting Fiction are set to release their brand new single ‘We Will Not Forget’ on  May 3rd 2010 through Xtra Mile Recordings.

A politically aware call to arms, it’s no coincidence that this single release will coincide with the forthcoming general election. Not intended as a two-fingered salute to the establishment in the traditional sense of some punk music, rather as a way to incite some pride and anger into a generation coming of voting age.

The stress is on the power of the vote in this song, it’s not a call to Anarchy; rather a call of responsibility. To put your politics into action, whatever they might be.Fighting Fiction formed late 2007 in Bristol when the four lads met at University. Bourne of a mutual passion for energetic live performance, their sound is a powerful collision of Indie-rock guitar riffs, reggae tinged punk and socially aware lyrics. These are songs written with anger and sung with passion. They evoke an honest and fundamentally English sound that is reminiscent of the brooding reggae guitar hooks of 'London Calling' era Clash, the lyrical wordplay and vocal delivery of Billy Bragg, and more recently, the acoustic guitar based sing-along sensibilities of Frank Turner and the King Blues.

Produced by Mark Williams (Biffy Clyro, Bloc Party, Million Dead, Oceansize), ‘We Will Not Forget’ is the bands most aggressive offering to date and will include a free acoustic download ‘Turning Rebellion Into Money.’To date, the band have released their debut EP ‘A Lesser Of Two Evils’ (November 2009); completed two UK-wide tours, securing slots at both the Isle of Wight and Isle of Man TT festivals, and have played support to the likes of This Town Needs Guns, Crazy Arm, Sam Isaac, Floors and Walls, Laura Marling and The Automatic.

Guitar Hero & Rock Band In Need Of A Tune-Up!

Written By: Ian S. Russell

It was right here on Scorpio Review all those years ago that we reported on this odd little music game called 'Guitar hero' that hoped to blur the line between arcade gaming & home gaming - Well, we were of-cause sceptical of there ambition. We then saw 1 of the biggest gaming crazies since the gaming world was set alive by a fat little pumber, his mate & a dinosaur (if you don't know what I'm referring to, stop reading now).

Well 4 years on from that start of the Guitar Hero game smashed it way into stores world-wide, the bubble seems to have burst on the fad, As The Pulse of Radio reports:
'Sales for music-based video games, including titles focused on METALLICA, VAN HALEN and THE BEATLES, took a dive in 2009 and show no immediate signs of reviving, according to The Wrap. While overall video game sales were off, industry analyst The NPD Group reported that sales for the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises were down 36 percent in 2009 from the previous year, with copies sold plunging from over 25 million units in 2008 to less than 16 million last year. While the business earned $1.6 billion in 2008, it made less than $900 million just 12 months later.

New titles issued in 2009 included Guitar Hero: Metallica, Rock Band: The Beatles, Guitar Hero V and Guitar Hero: Van Halen. The Beatles Rock Band game sold only 1.2 million copies, far less than publisher EA Games had expected - famously this was the 1st game ever to have obtained publishing rights for the Beatles back catolog, and had been antisipaited as one of the best games of 2009.

It is heavily rumoured that both the Rock Band and Guitar Hero games will continue, with band-specific games in the works for: Pearl Jam, U2, Jimi Hendrix, And even iconic Rock Band The Who.-------------------------------------
